This Is Your Brain on Depression: Creating a Path to Getting Better by Faith G. Harper

Dr. Faith explains the brain science behind depression and talks you through the different options out there for getting better. Because yes there are things you can do to feel good again (including drugs but avoiding spiraling successions of drug cocktails). If you need solid expert advice from someone who can also make your laugh ass off, this book's for you. This book contains 5 chapters, although not too many, but this book is complete with all the explanations given by Dr. Faith G. Harper. Not one important part is missed.

The first chapter explains the meaning of depression. Depression is a far more insidious problem, and sometimes it doesn't have anything to do with an identifiable loss. Before I read this book, I didn't understand what depression really was. Sometimes someone just says "I'm depressed" but, actually (after reading this book) depression is not the same as sadness, grief, coping with trauma, or coping with loss, although depression can have its onset in any of those things. Depression is linked to three neurotransmitters: dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine. So when they get jacked, our brain gets chaotic. Depression ensues. There is a ton of stuff that we have zero control over here: family history, trauma history, life bullshit.

Depression falls under the category heading of "mood disorder." If you don't have a diagnosis but have some suspicions, the information can also be helpful in parsing out what you bring in when you have a convo with your doctor or therapist. Which startled me is depression and other mood disorders are really difficult to treat. Research demonstrates that up to 39% of the people diagnosed with depression will still meet criteria (meaning still be clinically depressed) a year later. Even if effectively treated, your chances of having another depressive episode are still 26% higher than someone who hasn't suffered from one. If you're a person who can struggle with depression, you're not weak, you're great and strong, although that is really hard. You didn't deserve this. I emphasize here people struggling with depression (or any mental illness) are anything but crazy.

If you ask me which part do I like the most? Of course, the part about "what is depression?" This part explains in great detail how depression can occur, too many unfamiliar words (doctor's words) but Dr. Faith explains in easy words, so it's easy to understand, and don't forget there's additional humor that makes me laugh out loud. This book can be for all people who want to understand about depression. The more we become aware of mental illness the better too, because it is essential to life. Too many people are not aware of mental illness. They even feel ashamed if they have been diagnosed and struggle with mental illness.

I'm sure each book has its strengths and weaknesses and now we will discuss. The strengths of this book are explained with splendid words, so that makes the readers not bored. The explanation is really that detailed. The cover is excellent and makes me interested while I see it for the first time. For the price, this book is worth it to buy. The weaknesses of this book are that not all the bookstores sell this book and not too many reviews. I dare to give a rate of 10/10. If you don't believe me, please read this book yourself.

Thank you for reading my blog. Have a nice day!
